I have a vb.net application.  I make odbc connection to database through code.  I am connecting to sqexpress database.  It works perfectly on all desktops and even a server running windows server 2003.  They're IT guy wants it loaded on his termnal server to allow remote users access to new program.  Creating the odbc connection through wizard works perfectly and "test connection" is successful.  However, when i start program, the code that works perfectly everywhere else fails.  The error is "provider cannot be found".  MDAC appears to be loaded and ran componentchecker 2.0 utility from microsoft which found it (2.8 sp2) and didn't indicate any problem.

So, I think you are saying that your program when running on an XP machine...or a Windows 2003 server will run fine.   However, when you install the program on a Terminal server and try to run the program it fails...

is this correct?

Can you login to the Terminal server with full administrator rights and try to run the program?  Maybe this is permissions problem on the TS?

Yes, the terminal server OS is windows server 2003.  It is working on another server in building with same OS and all XP desktops.  The database is located on another machine so it is connecting across the network.  As I mentioned before the ODBC wizard seems to connect normally and indicates no issue connecting to the database on the other server.  The problem is only occuring when my code opens the connection.

Can you login locally to the Terminal server with full administrator rights and try to run the program?  Maybe this is permissions problem on the TS?

we tried under full admin with no success...is there some particular settings I can check? Maybe something specific to the terminal services environment

Well...if you can't run the program by walking up to the server and logging in with administrator (your logging in to the console), I don't know if TS is really the problem...

How do you go about installing the app?  On a terminal server in application mode, you typically have to put the TS server in install mode...before installing the application.

Log in as an Administrator to the console (remotely using mstsc /console switch).
open a command prompt
execute: change user /install
run your setup program as normal
once complete execute: change user /execute

Changing to install mode did not solve the connection issue.  After new install under this mode it still failed at startup.  After searching for some options I decided to reinstall MDAC 2.8 sp2.  See link below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818954

Once the MDAC installation was complete I restarted my program and everything ran perfectly.
FYI:  I did not have to restart the server.

thanks for the expert input
