Error 1058 - the service cannot be started

Hello,

I am attempting to start a scheduler service on server 2008 machine, the service will not start giving "Error 1058 - the service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

I have seen in other posts that this typically indicates a disabled hardware profile, but I am not able to open the service properties to check this.  When I attempt to open the properties, I get the error: "the system cannot find the file specified."

Trying to start the service via command line just gives the same error.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

What service is it? If it is a added service for a program then you might are going to have to do a repair on the application.

It will be usefull to know the name of the backup application.

Some backup applications only work on tape devices and fail when they are not present. Maybe the service is just a laucher to make the backup application to perform the backup. The application may have a graphical interface where options are configured. If so, check there if the "devices associated with it" are correct.

Software is Ahsay, which is online backup.  Running a manual backup works fine, just a problem with the scheduler.

Microsoft Developers set up event logs with specific Event ID ranges for specific applications:

For instance Events in the 4000's, (like 4005 and 415) relate to DNS
Events in the 13000's relate to File Replication services (FRS)
Events in the 1000's (like 1058 and 1030) relate to memory leaks or Netbios translation.

I would be willing to bet that your service for backing up uses netbios to find machines it backs up to. Since you have event 1058, It is my first guess that your backup software uses Netbios to communicate with these machines. I would do some netbios troubleshooting in order to see if I could figure out the problem.

On your NIC configuration, TCP/IP properties>>advanced button>>WINS TAB what settings do you have. If Netbios is disabled, then you don't have netbios associated with your backup software. So, your backup service is NOT associated with Netbios services.

I was able to verify that Ahsay does not use NetBIOS.

Beyond that I had seen others with similar issues and it was rooted in a registry problem, had user performa registry scan with crap cleaner, replaired all errors, but still the same result.

That backup software uses netbios to communicate with. Many folks disable netbios without realizing that a bunch of microsoft key services use it for the domain.

In this case, your backup server and client need netbios to communicate with. If you enable on both client and server, you will probably have NO problems with your backup utility.

The inability to communicate via netbios is your problem. I am sure of it.

ChiefIT, appreciate your attentiveness.  I am attaching two screen shots one from the client machine and one from the back end server, both have netbios enabled

OK, that default configuration can be misleading.

What that means is your client and server will go to the DHCP server for the browselist. That means if  your DHCP server is NOT your PDCe (primary domain controller emulator), then your browselist is negated.

Change both to Netbios over TCP/IP and then make sure the windows firewall is not blocking Netbios on both client/server.

Just to clarify a few more things - these machines are not on the same network.

the client machine is at site 'a', while the backup server is on a totally separate network at say site 'b'

Beyond that, if i run a manual backup, there are no problems.  (that is why I am pushing back on the netbios issue)

In what way do you perform a manual backup. To an Off site client? To a client on the same site?

I think your problem will be site specific, meaning Site A, you can backup at will, site B you can not.

That's because netbios is not routeable. Not routeable meanse it will not propogate through nat, through a VPN tunnel or to the other domain. In order to do so, it needs WINS as a helper.

The way this works is each site has a domain master, (namely the PDCe on each site) or the PDCe on site 1 and another DC on site 2. Without a WINS connection between the two broadcast domain masters, you will not be able to use netbios to communicate with. Your manual backup may have been performed on a client PC that is within the same broadcast domain. broadcast domains are split up at the router. So, circle everything on one site to the router and you are looking at that site's broadcast domain.

You have two broadcast domains (site A and site B) for these to communicate via netbios, you need a WINS connection or LMHOST connection between the two site master browsers. Otherwise the netbios name will not work, nor will the computers show up in my network places.

Here is the easiest thing to do. Use the fully qualified domain name to point to the client machien with your backup server. Example:
Instead of  client1
use
client1.domain.name

changing that will use DNS instead of Netbios.

Manual and scheduled backups are done to an off site server via the clients WAN connection using port 80.  The off site server is identified by the host name, for example, http://backup.company.net

The client can communicate fine with the back end server.  This client is installed on machines across the US and no additional network config is necessary.

The issue is really that the scheduler service will not start and I am not able to even view the properties of the service, getting the error "the system cannot find the file specified."

I agree with you. If you can backup manually there is nothing wrong with your connection. It is a service issue. I would (if it is possible) reinstall the software but doing a full cleanup before.

Uninstall the software.

Open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services. Delete any key (they look like folders in regedit) related with the service.

Search in Program files for the folder of the application and delete it.

Look in the current user profile for possible program data related with the software.

Then reinstall the software.

Go to services and check the state of the service. Check if you can access to the properties of the service.

unistall reinstall does not get to the root cause of the issue
