Can I hot dock La Cie Hd

I have a La Cie external HD d2 Quarda. I want to attach it to my Win 2003 SBS Sata. It works allright, but I cannot hot dock it, I always need to restart my server to be able to see it.  Can someone please explain this: does sata not support hot docking or is it something else, or is there a way nevertheless to do connect it without restarting?

if you use a PCI to sata card, it has all the Sata properties - but look that you get a hot-swapppable one !

What if you run diskpart program ..

C:\>DISKPART

then enter "rescan"

Thank you. Is this for diagnostic purposes, so that you have more info to help me or is this a way for me to access this hd without rebooting?

diskpart, rescan is supposed to tell the O/S to look for new peripherals and build necessary drive letters for them.

Also just ignore the part about needing to reboot.  You just have crappy drivers.  Does it work if you don't reboot?

I ran Diskpart and it didnt change anything, I refreshed the contents of My computer but the hd did not appear. Rescan didnt report anything nor ask for a reboot.

It *should* be able to be seen without having to reboot. Have you gone to LeCie's website and downloaded latest drivers / firmware?   Are you using the Win2K3 drivers version, or did you load one for XP or something like that?

There are a few things there, but nothing is called a 'driver'

the hot swap feature is an option that the Sata controller of the system must support.
so check if your system sata controller has it, or buy a PCI to Sata card, that has the option

The bracket I use is connected to the internal sata port, not to a pci slot. I wouldnt know otherwise how to check what you ask. I have a HP Proliant ML 115 server.

I have found it, this server is apparently non hot swappable. But you say I can bypass that with a PCI connection. Is that just as fast?
