Open XML files, Excel 2007

I'm trying to open some XML files another company has sent me.  The small files (786KB) open okay in Excel 2007 and I can sort the data in a table format but, 75% of them are larger and end up crashing Excel.  Can anyone recommend another solution to preview these files?  Maybe a third-party app?  The larger files are around 12MB each.  My goal is to open them in a format similar to an Excel spreadsheet to sort through the transactions.
I don't think it's hardware related, I'm using quad proc, with 8GB of memory.

You could download Microsoft's Visual Studio Express package for Web Applications (the free version) to edit XML files and such with a fully functional application written for just those kinds of things.

I tried with Access 2007, no luck.  I'm reviewing Microsoft's Visual Studio Express right now.  I'd like to open these files in a spreadsheet format (like Excel) to search for transactions.
