Wireless Router Comparison -- Cisco vs D-Link

We have a D-Link DIR-655 router that we connect to our cable modem. We get like 20Mbps down, 6Mbps up. The main reasons we got this router were for distant reception and gaming speed. We have only one real gamer in the family. The rest of us can deal with occasional lags or slightly less performance.

So, since I'm somewhat familiar with Cisco IOS, I'm considering replacing the D-Link with something like a Cisco 871. How does it compare? Granted, I'll probably set up some QoS especially for his setup, but how do the performance and reception compare?

I cannot speak to your Cisco, but I have a Cisco / LinkSys RV042 at home on a Cable system and it is as fast as blazes. I bridge a Netopia Wireless router onto it and it is very fast as well.

My overall experience is that Commercial gear (e.g. your Cisco) is very fast in a small business or home environment.  Take care that you set your MTU properly. DSL systems need an MTU of 1492 or a bit less whereas Cable systems seem happy with 1500  ... Thinkpads_User
