I'm having some trouble creating a proper unattended install .xml for windows 7 x64.

We are using WIndows Deployment Services, using a x86 setup image to deploy both windows 7 x86 and x64. The setup image has a script added to prompt for a computer name before setup starts, and replaces all instances of %COMPUTERNAME% in the unattended.xml file after setup completes, before the reboot.

32-bit windows 7 installs perfectly, and automatically joins our domain afterwards.

64-bit windows installs fine as well, but at the first reboot asks for a local username to be created, how to configu the automatic updates, and what network the PC is connected to.

I have used my 32bit xml file as baseline to create the following unattended file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

Thanks for the suggestion, but it turns out that contrary to the WDS documentation, in order for unattended domain joins to work with an x64 install, you do need to use the x64 setup image.

Doing a simple find -> replace of x86 to amd64 in the 32bit unattended install file, and using a 64bit install image did the trick.

Just want to clarify,

If I put this xml into WDS console, is it attached to relevant WIM images we want to deploy or attached as WDSclient.xml?

Hey Dude,

the DiskConfiguration part solved my biggest problem with the WDS.
My Unattend.xml wont wipe the disks. Now it does!
Thanks a lot! :)
