Is this a new www prefix?

I have not run into this before and can't find any information on it, so would appreciate your assistance.

The URL for the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta is:

http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/

What does the wwwnc stand for?

Thank you.

wwwnc is actually a subdomain of cdc.gov.  Website administrators can create any subdomain they want, generally they create a www. subdomain but they don't have to.

Thank you, but I'm not sure about that.

I understand sub-domains a bit, but this appears to be a top-level domain.

There is no "dot" between the www.nc.cdc.com.

It's http://wwwnc.cdc.gov

Can that still be a sub domain without the dot?
