I understand sub-domains a bit, but this appears to be a top-level domain.  

There is no "dot" between the www.nc.cdc.com [http://www.nc.cdc.com].

It's http://wwwnc.cdc.gov [http://wwwnc.cdc.gov]

Can that still be a sub domain without the dot?
