Blender particle object

In Blender 2.49b using objects as particles was changed from the deprecated "duplivert" method.  The new technique seems to be quite simple:  Change the "visualization" for the particle to "object" and then type in the name of the object in the OB: field on the screen.  Whenever I try this after typing the name of the object and pressing RETURN, the name disappears!  What am I missing?
