DNS root hints not working Windows 2008

Hi,

We have a Windows 2008 domain with DNS forwarders.
Normally this should work without DNS forwarders, then it uses root hints.
But some addresses were not resolved with the root hints.
I saw this because, some mails where not delivered, and i put the forwarders in place and it was fixed.
How is this possible?

Is this an R2 edition? I had the problem with EDNS probes on an R2 box where I didn't before

I personally always use forwarders because I find the root hints to be unreliable.

Also was it completely upto date? There has been some root hint updates recently.

This is a known issue with Windows 2008 servers.
