How to upgrade Windows 2000 AD to windows 2003 Active Directory

Dear Expert,
We are still using windows 2000 Active Directory in one location.
There are two w2k Domain controllers in one forest and two exchange 2003 enterprise servers on windows 2003 platforms.
We would like to upgrade to windows 2003 Active Directory.
Can you give me some guidelines and steps on how to perform this upgrade?
We do not want to touch the exchange 2003 environment.
Can you also tell me if there is any impact on our existing exchange 2003 platform?
Thanks a lot,
Charlie

Hi,

Make sure that you take AD backup before you to any changes.

1. Remove DC which is hosting Schema master from the network and insert Windows 2003 CD while the Windows 2000 OS is running, then open the command prompt >start run cmd ;).  In the I386 directory on the CD you must run the adprep /forestprep command. Note this command must run uninterrupted

2. Then connect to the network if you see any errors in the event viwer

3. Then run adprep /doaminprep  on the infrastracture master

4. Once domainprep and forestprep is completed then you can introduce new windows 2003 server and promote as DC and transfer the master roles

5. Once all the roles is transfered then you  can demote and decomission existing 2000 servers

Krishna

Hi Krishna,
I have some questions:
i) In step one, why do you take the DC off line and run adprep /forestprep?
ii) What will happen when you connet it back to the network in step (2)?  Are we going to see some error in the event viewer and we can igonre it?
iii) Can you give me more details on step (4) on how to introduce ann promote as DC(2003) and transfer the master roles?
Thanks,
Charlie

to complement Krishna comments and your questions:
step 3 details- on the new server  start- run  and type dcpromo this will start the AD wizard  to add this server as DC, on the wizard select  additional domain controller  for  an existing domain  whe the wizard finish it will request a reboot after that this server will be an additional domain controller on your AD
here are the details(its fro sbs2003 but of course is the same for win 2003 standard)
