SBS 2008 Imaging Backup and Partition size issue

Im having troubles with SBS 2008's backup utility. I have found out that the Windows imaging backup will not work if the hard drive is smaller then the partition you are trying to backup.

For example, if there is a partition size that is 1.9tb you would need a backup drive greater then 1.9tb to back up this partition, no matter how much data is on the partition.

The only way you can get this backup to work is to resize the partition to something that your backup drive can handle.

Does anyone know any other way or a workaround for this problem?

The default SBS backup configuration recommends the backup USB drive/s be 2.5 times  the size of the drive/partition you are backing up. This is to allow for the multiple and incremental images.

You might want to consider another alternative such as BackUp assist. It will handle SBS including the Exchange database. Another popular product is Storagecraft's Shadow Protect for SBS

BackupAssist with a combination of different backup types, very nasty.

BackupAssist doesnt care that the destination is smaller than the partition that you are backing up. When resotring this is a problem, the partition must be the same or larger.
