The only Microsoft equivalent of Zenworks is SMS (Systems Management Server).

We are currently migrating from a Novell Netware Backend to a Windows server 2008 backend, and we have evaluated SMS, and found it inadequate. So on Server 2008 we will deploy Zenworks Configuration Management 10

SMS is old..  The new version is called Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), and as one of the "Systems Center" tools, it may do what you're looking for..  I've never used ZEN, but if it's got real-time monitoring capabilities, you may want to also investigate SCOM   (Systems Center Operations Manager, formerly "MOM")

Unfortunately MS have nothing which even comes close to Zen.

A number of years ago Novell completely de-coupled the product from Netware and eDirectory. You can now bind it to anything you like; including AD, as many [enlightened] people do.
