authenticating Mysql users using openLDAP

Is there a way to authenticated Mysql users using openLDAP? And I don't mean using libpam-mysql
libnss-mysql which work internally? I mean for the Mysql to make an authentication call to an outside server running LDAP on port 389 using SASL or TLS.

There is no direct way for this as I found.
"this is possible with mysql proxy. there's a few things you need to know to make this work:

mysql proxy can execute shell commands mysql proxy can intercept and rewrite authentication

these two pages will help you get started:

example of running a shell command: http://forge.mysql.com/tools/tool.php?id=79 example of intercepting and rewriting authentication: http://jan.kneschke.de/2009/6/25/mysql-proxy-roles

I am still in the middle of implementing the solutions to see if they work. I have to set up complete MySQL environment for testing....this is difficult because our setup is complicated
