The router range does not reach far enough.

The home router, which I believer is a Linksys, WRT54G, does not reach the rest of the house. I have done a drawing of the walls and all the mayor walls.  Looking to extend the range, not sure what is compatible and also not sure if is better to go with an range extender or a point of access.   Also, should your solution be placed.

Please advise.
Thanks,
JP

Can not you put your router somewhere in the middle of your house? Somewhere near E location.

The location of additional AP should be the same - at the limit of exsisting range.

How did you test the signal strenth? How many meters is it from R to L ? Do your wall's steel?

If it was a laptop for example then it will depend on the type of wifi card and antenna count in the laptop.
Best way is to test it with laptop that has 2 builtin antenna's.

Davorin, I can't change the location, since there is where the cable comes in through, there is where the desktops are located.  There rest of the house, is where the laptops are, and I was also hoping to use wifi devices such as skype wifi phone, that could work around the house, laptops, etc. You also mention the use of AP - is that short for "access point".  Please identify which one you would suggest, and what the commen issues when using these (i.e. does it drop the signal often from the base or going to the pc, does the person have to be IT literate to corrects the drops, etc).

Aelatik, I am not there right now, but I will test the signal later today.

Thanks,
JP

Greater distance with multiple hindrances (wall, concrete, glass) can cause signal to decrease and hence it is not reaching 'L' pt.

The only option as suggested by Davorin would be to relocate the WiFI device towards center for improving signal quality. You may use a hub for desktops and extend the WiFi towards center.

If you can't move the current wireless router out of the room can you at least extend it with a longer cable to the other side of the room? Or put it up near the ceiling maybe?

If it has to stay where it is then you may be able to put a wireless bridge or repeater somewhere outside that end room closer to the living room. Maybe in the middle hallway? beween R and E so there are no walls or doors between it and the living room.

It is possible that adjusting the antenna on the router would give you enough signal to that low area. Sometimes a USB adapter vs the built in antenna on the laptop will pick up enough signal to be satisfactory.

Can the internet signal be sent from the router by plugging it into the wall phone plug and then from another room then connect some sort of extender by plugging it into the wall?

Thanks,
JP

No. Unless you have ports wired for ethernet you aren't going to be able to plug those devices into the wall jacks.

As you already have linksys wireless router, I would stick with the same vendor.
Linksys WAP54G is an option.
How to configure:
http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4200
You can also use another WRT54G as repeater to extend the range.
Why choosing access point (AP) or router over extender (WRE54G)? For flexibility - AP normally you can configure as AP, AP client, bridge or repeter/extender. Extender can be only extender.

Normally you should have no problems no matter what equipment do you choose.
