You could try Smoothwall - I've always found it to be really good but I'm not 100% certain whether it supports snort 2.8 rules or not. It certainly doesn't come with snort any more, you have to add it after install.

The support forums there are really good so they could probably answer any other questions you may have.

Have a look at:

My personal favorite is pfsense: http://www.pfsense.com/

It does have the Snort 2.8 package (latest is 2.8.4.1 I think).

1.2.3 is the latest stable release. Get the Live CD first to try it out, you can use the disk to install it on the hdd afterwards if you want.

There is also monowall, have a look at some comparisons:
http://www.freebsdnews.net/2008/08/26/pfsense-vs-smoothwall/
http://www.freebsdnews.net/2007/11/10/smoothwall-vs-m0n0wall-a-comparison/
http://www.freebsdnews.net/2007/06/23/pfsense-versus-m0n0wall/

I've not been through all of those articles, but pfsense was a fork of monowall, also I think the comparisons for smoothwall may have been for express 2 whereas the current version is smoothwall express 3.

It really depends what your requirements are, but there are some really nice features in express 3, the realtime bandwidth monitoring is useful and QoS is very handy if you need to be able to balance available bandwidth between multiple apps/users and the caching is also very handy.

hi thanks
one think i realized about pfsense

it has Inbound Load Balancing , does smoothwall has this options ??

QEMSCommented:
Inbound load balancing is not available in smoothwall express, so if that is a requirement then that would be a deal breaker for smoothwall.

Their corporate version does have this - comparisons are available at http://www.smoothwall.net/products/comparison.gpl.php

I'm not sure how pfsense works with their cororate offerings, just check whether that option is included by default or whether it is a paid add-on.

Its not something I have needed to do within smoothwall - but I believe this link should give you the information on how to achieve it:

There is also the administrator guide which may cover it, you can download it free of charge by registering at https://my.smoothwall.org/cgi-bin/signin.cgi?from=download.cgi

You can also access it at: http://www.scribd.com/doc/16563879/Smooth-Wall-Express-3-Administrator-Guide-V2

Have a look at the section called "Configuring Timed Access to the Internet"
