APC battery failing on power-up

I have an SUA1500 just out of box.  I connected the battery and plugged it into the wall to charge it a little before plugging any devices into it.  However, when I do this, I get a constant beeping with approximately a 1 second interval, this beeping is accompanied by both the entire lines of "battery charge" and "load" led's blinking in unison with the beeps.  Occasionally, some of the other led's will blink with them.  The only way to stop this is to unplug from wall and disconnect the battery.
This is a brand new system (have had in possession for about two months, but first time using), what can be done?
BTW, I took a peek on the APC website's knowledgebase and found nothing relevant.  Will try calling when I get a chance today, but am hopeful I can get a solution here first.

It may be warning that battery is below "warning level" of charge.  I am going to leave it plugged in for a short while to see if it charges and the blinking/beeping stops...
out of the box, large UPSs from APC needs to be plugged in to a mains outlet (switched on), with the UPS unit left "off", for about 24 to 36 hours.

after that you can use the UPS unit normally.
