SharePoint 2007 Trusts and Connections

I have a SharePoint 2007 Portal and about 15 Sites within with users uploading and working on assorted office documents.  So now they want to view data and have Excel workbooks displayable (Excel Web Part).

I tried adding their shared doc sites to the list of trusted locations and then tried adding one or two workbooks to their sites via the Excel Web Part.  Unfortunately,  it seems that the documents that were added to their shared docs folders prior to adding the shared doc folders to the list of trusted locations will not load:
"
The workbook that you selected cannot be opened.

The workbook may be in an unsupported file format, or it may be corrupt.

Would you like to try and open this file in Excel?
"
So here are my questions:
Do you need to setup the trusted location prior to uploading files or the files will not be trusted?
Do only 2007 Excel files open in Excel Web Part?
Will macro enabled Excel files open in Excel Web Part?
What is the cause of this error?

weird...the form posted while I was writing...let's try again:
question: Do you need to setup the trusted location prior to uploading files or the files will not be trusted?
answer: No, it will allow previously uploaded excel documents to work.

question: Do only 2007 Excel files open in Excel Web Part?
answer:  I think it works for excel 2003, but honestly, I'm not 100% sure.  I know you can view with Office 2003 on the client.

question:  Will macro enabled Excel files open in Excel Web Part?
answer: Never tried it, but I'd be suprised if this worked.

question:  What is the cause of this error?
answer (hopefully):  If you've tried uploading a simple excel spreadsheet, and still can't display it in a web part after configuring the library as a trusted location, then something must be wrong with how you're setting the trusted location, or something is wrong with how Excel Services is running on your environment.  Normally what you're trying to do is pretty simple.

Oh, one other thing to check.  Make sure the spreadsheet is published to Excel Services.  You can do this from Excel:  File > Publish > Excel Services

Ok. So, if it is the case that I can setup the trust locations after depositing the file(s), then the only reason that I can see for files not displaying in the web part (with aboove quoted error message) must be that the 2003 file format will not work.  I will confirm that with some experiments, but it seems like the only alternative.

Regarding, is the Excel Service correctly configured and the trusted site configured correctly, I can open some workbooks.

I'll let you know what I uncover...

It appears that you must be using 2007 .xlsx files to see the workbook rendered in the Excel Web Part.
