What are you using to open the PDF file (Reader, Acrobat, 3rd party app)? If it's Adobe software, do you get a popup for a split second when it's opening? Any other error messages or warnings?

It is possible that the PDF file is corrupt. You may want to get in touch with the author (or the site you downloaded the PDF file from) and let them know about your problems and ask them what tools they use to view the file.
