Adding External Users to SharePoint

I have an extranet which uses SharePoint.  How can I add users to SharePoint that are not in Active Directory?

it depends on what type of security you're using for those users.  a common type of security is Forms.

of course, i'm assuming you're also using SSL.  if you're not, then you'll want to ... if your using will be authenticating in some way.
