Adding a USB PCI card to ESX4

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to make a USB card visable in ESX if I install it after the ESX software has gone on.  Fo some reason it just does not seem to be detected, do i need to run a linux comand to get the kernel to see it

You can't do anything.  USB is not supported for storage.

Perhaps it will work with VMDirectPath but your server must support IOMMU
Or you can try alternative way to connect usb drive, check out my article http://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/Software/VMWare/Copy-files-to-USB-drive-under-VMware-ESX4-ESXi4-vSphere-console.html

For passtru to work ur server must support IOMMU, enable the feature in BIOS

It is enabled.  I had a previous USB PCI card, but found it was faulty.  I have replaced it, but it is not showing up in ESX Vsphere so i can enable it again

That could be a problem, becoz hardware support with esx/esxi is quite strict
If it is not in HCL but it worked before means you are lucky

Is same chipset, and I have a similar card in another ESX server.  I have another card in te office and will check the HCL tomorrow.

Final result on this seems that the USB card is working intermitently.  I have opted to use the Front Panel USB in the pass through for the Shadow Protect USB backup drives, and it works great.

Although it did not fix the problem it did point out that the HCL may have been an issue.
