Programs show up in taskmgr Processes but not in open Applications

Programs show up in taskmgr "Processes" but do not seem to open for use....when clicking on them, the hour glass shows & then nothing happens.  When I check the taskmgr, they are listed in Processes but not in Applications.  Have rebooted several times but still happening with several programs....Crystal Reports, DocRecord.....  Internet explorer & outlook is fine.

Do you have hung print jobs?

Not all processes are client applications. Some of them provide background services or tasks and do not have a GUI. For the ones that you are sure have a GUI but are not responding... you say they appear in processes even after a reboot? They must be launching at startup for some reason. Don't know why they would be hung though. Try disabling these applications from running at startup and see if you can launch them manually afterward.

Or do these applications not appear in processes immediately after reboot, but only appear after you attempt to launch the application (even if the application never shows up)? In that case there is probably something more serious going on...

No hung print jobs.  Programs are not in startup group.  After reboot, when we click on them to use them, the hourglass appears as we expect but then it disappears & the programs do not appear for us to use.  When I check in taskmgr, they do show up in processes but not in applications tab.  I have just done a system restore to a point prior to this problem but it continues.

The XP SP3 update is still "ready for install".  I asked if it had been started & then stopped by anyone.  I'm told no, but thought I'd mention it as additional info.  Thanks for help.

Do you want this system to be running Service Pack 3? If so, try letting the update completely install and see if the problem goes away.

Hi, I let the update go through & now it will not load past the boot screen....none of the options will load. It continues to loop back to the choice menu....won't go into safe mode....won't load "last known good configuration".....nothing just keeps looping back to that boot screen.

HI all.  I am having to completely reinstall the OS.  Have tried everything but cannot get past the boot problem. Thanks for the help but will close the question.
