XML XPATH last record error

This err comes up in classic asp when I attempt to retrieve the last record using last()

msxml3.dll error '80004005'
Unknown method. /xml/user_vars/*[-->last()<--]
/common/, line 280

attempt 1:

lastnode = wf_WebFormXML.selectSingleNode("/xml/user_vars/*[last()]")

attempt 2: 

lastnode = wf_WebFormXML.selectSingleNode("/xml/user_vars/[last()]")

    set lastnode = wf_WebFormXML.SelectSingleNode("/xml/user_vars/[contains(@id, '" & table  & "']")

    this is returning a similar err.

    do you call
    wf_WebFormXML.setProperty "SelectionLanguage", "XPath"
    before calling SelectSingleNode ?
