Can't change sound schemes, XP

All of a sudden (in the last week or so) I can't change my sound schemes.  I've been prevented in changing individual sounds as well as whole sound schemes.
I found this problem being discussed in forums elsewhere; the "solutions" are checking for malware and doing a scannow.
Any suggestions?
I have XP Pro

Are you running XP pro Service Pack 3?  Secondly are you running an Antivirus application on this computer?  If you are running an Antivirus solution...what product are your running and what version is it?

Some additional questions to the above post: what exactly blocks you from changing the scheme? Do you get error messages? Are the options greyed out?

XP Pro SP3
AVG 9.0
Just ran a complete scan -- no virus found
Nothing blocks me from making the sound changes.  But the changes are not kept.  Same sounds after changes.
No error messages.  Options not greyed out.
I have sound.  Just can't change the sound schemes.

Can you temporarily disable AVG (stop it completely ? )
and then retry ???

I have seen so much issues with this lousy AV that you should give it a try...
Try uninstalling it also ....

It is probably AVG resident shield function that is blocking the thing ....

try 'hijackThis' software , download it from majorgeeks.com

run it and check of suspicious enteries, fix them

Also check if your sound card is still enabled.

Re: AVG
will disable AVG and try again; will also try uninstall/reinstall
(will also check AVG resident shield function)
Coincidentally(?), I upgraded from AVG 8.5 (free) to AVG 9.0 (paid) about two weeks ago.  Problem appeared within that time.

subsequently, will run hijackThis.  sound card is ok
thanks!

AVG 9.0 does indeed interfere with sound schemes -- blocking any changes.  Verified that when I uninstalled it.  Unfortunately, I recently paid for AVG 9.0 and now I need to determine if I can use it  and bypass the issue.

I asked AVG tech support for their recommendation and they sent me a canned, nearly undecipherable response.  My recommendation: forget AVG.
