Copying into iTunes

I've got some songs on a USB key that I'm trying to get onto my iPod to no avail.

I've copied the songs into their own directory under a "group" and "album" and then tried to import them into iTunes.  I then sync to my iPod, but they never show up.

What am I missing?

Nice selections.  Any recommendations to narrow it down?

Are the songs imported into ITunes library?
If not, copy the folder into ITunes library-usually under my music, ITunes music.
Once its in that directory open up ITunes application and drag and drop  that folder into ITunes application.
