Cannot access external hard drive, says GPT partition, but it is not.

I can't access an external Western Digital 500gb hard drive on a windows XP SP3 machine.

The hard drive was formated and loaded with data from a Vista 32bit system as NTFS.  I can access the hard drive from other Vista 32bit computers (even macs can read it, but can't write)  except for on one XP PRO SP3 machine.

This machine doesn't assign a drive letter to the HD and says that it is a GPT partition.  I know this isnt the case since it was created as NTFS on a 32 bit Vista operating system.

Any ideas?

I had the same issue with my seagate external HDD. The best way for u would be - to backup all data of your external HDD to another partition or another hard drive. Then use mount in Disk management Inside Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
Delete whole partition of HDD and create NTFS partition and you will now be able to open your hard-drive on any system.

    Accepted Solution

To check if the drive is GPT or not go to Windows Disk Management via - right click on My Computer - Manage - Disk Management.
There right click on external HDD (not partition) and select Properties. In opened window select Volumes. There you will see if the drive is GPT or MBR partitioned.
After that if it turns to be GPT connect the drive to Vista again, copy out all data as anggry lady recommended and same way via Windows Disk Management of Vista delete all partitions from this external drive.
Then right click on HDD (not free space) and select Make MBR.
Ok it is done and you can create partition on it. Format it and bring back your data.
