When installing a new printer, is installing the GDI package important or mandatory or recommended?

Also what benefit may Port monitor provide?

I'm not sure what you mean by your first question. GDI printers are printers that rely on the Windows graphics engine to convert the page into dots on the paper. The graphics engine is the same as the one that converts the page into screen pixels. However, to make it convert to printer pixels, you need a driver for the printer. For a GDI printer that is a GDI driver, which usually only works with one printer model, and a particular operating system. As GDI printers have very little built-in intelligence, they tend to be cheap.

More expensive printers support a language like PCL, PostScript or ESC-P. The drivers for these printers rely on intelligence in the printer to do the conversion to paper pixels. As a result, a driver for one model will usually work with other models as well - although not always to the user's satisfaction.

Printer Port Monitors are part of the driver. With networked printers you can use either LPR or TCPMON as the port monitor. Most installations use TCPMON but networked printers typically support both. Since Windows 2000 both of them are part of the OS. With Win 95/95 you had to install a 3rd party utility, and NT only supported LPR.
