Exchange Server 2003 to 2008 migration
I have a server running Server 2003 and on it a virtual Server 2008.
The current 2003 is running exchange 03 and the exchange 03 needs to be moved over to the 08 (running exchange 08)
What is the recomended step by step for migrating Active Directory and Exchange from 03 to the virtual 08 without using virtual tools and no loss of data (mailboxes etc...)?
*does it matter at all that one machine is virtual for the migration?
*If so what steps would be diffrent if the two machines were both physical or the 03 was the virtual and the 08 was physical?
Once the migration is done what is the quicest and safest method for getting 08 to be the physical server (just image and install...)?

I will need much more detailed steps.
The Server 2008 is running Exchange 2008 therefore I will not be installing Exchange 2003 on the Server 2008.

Well, I was slightly confused with your question. There is no such application as Exchange 2008. Do you mean Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010?

To remove the 03 and only use 08 would it be easiest to just image (say clonezilla) and install that image on what used to be the 03 server or is there a better way to make a VM the hardware OS?

- Install Exchange 2003 on your Windows Server 2008.
- Create a new, empty mailbox store and public folders store.
- Move your users from your Windows 2003 Server to your Windows Server 2008.
- Replicate your Public Folders to the Windows Server 2008.
You should now be able to remove Exchange (uninstall) from the Windows 2003 Server.If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to post them.
