I have a new customer who is wanting a server built for him. he wants to use autodesk vault installed but has said that he needs 500GB of HDD space on the server. This (apart from being very expensive with SAS drives) seems very large, can anyone explain why autodesk vault needs this and what other solutions there may be?

The bottom line is that Autodesk files can become very large, depending on the types of projects you client works on.  It is probably a best guess by them based on the size of the current files they have and adding in expected growth.  It will work with far less than 500GB, but doesn't have to.  Honestly, though, hard drive cost has come down a great deal in the last couple of years...  500GB SAS internal drive should be under $1000.  I found a 450 on TigerDirect.com for $899.
