Norton Ghost causes hard drive to say no operating system found

I have norton ghost 2003 I put on a 40gig drive to clone to an 80 gig drive. Got no errors or anything, it reboots the computer and says no operating system found. I've removed the slave drive and same issue. I hooked the 40 up to another machine to look and see the virpart.dat and boot.ini files were created. I deleted these and the original drive still will not boot. Windows folder and all other folders are intact. I see autoexec, io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com etc for the XP OS that is installed and none of those show that they were modified when ghost ran. How can I get the original system to boot back up?

Is the imaged drive going into a computer with the exact same hardware specs?

This is a long shot...but I've run into similar issues when imaging hard drives for Dell computers. Sometimes you have to switch SATA operation to AHCI...or vise versa; then try booting it up.

The original drive should always leave untouched - used ghost hundreds time, never heard about ruining original drive (you might have problems then booting cloned one).

can't boot original drive and new ghosted drive has nothing on it, like ghost never started on reboot and the new drive is going back into the machine I'm using to ghost where the original drive is from.

Are you saying that drive you are cloning to is empty (left unchanged)? In my experience it is impossible - you misconfigured ghost on you ghost version is not working correctly...

I mean maybe you switched drives you want to clone (cloned empty drive to original)?

sraleyAuthor Commented:
No I selected clone disk 1 to disk 2, disk 2 hooking it up is empty because the ghost screen never came up when it said it was going to reboot computer, as soon as computer rebooted I got operating system not found.

how can I recover so I can boot up the original drive without having to reinstall everything on it?

Vaidas911Commented:
what about those drives content - are they identical? You can check that with any live cd.

the 80 gig is empty. Norton never  started to touch it. the 40 gig is intact, I see everything that was on it before. LIke I said the Norton Dos Ghost screen never came up on the reboot.

Boot to your XP disk, enter recovery console and execute fixboot and fixmbr. Then it should boot. If it doesn't, boot to the disk again and run a repair install. Ghost 2003 is too old. Use Acronis or similar. I trust you have essential data backed up.

I ran fixboot and fixmbr now i get NTLDR is missing when it boots. I can't run a repair install since I've downloaded SP3 and the cd with the machine is SP2 only. I don't have an install cd with SP3.

You can repair with sp2 then reapply sp3 or slipstream the service pack into a new disk. Download autostreamer. Really easy.
