Document.getDocumentElement.toString() is not working on unix

HI,
Document.getDocumentElement.toString()  is returning a string in windows .However when i tried on Unix, its returning null. Can anyone help me in finding the alternate solution for tihs.
i have a document object  . i want to convert the document object to string.
any help would be appreciated.
