HP 970 cxi

My HP 970 cxi printer is attached by parallel lead to an XP PC. There is a DOS Retail Programme running and the printer prints all the reports from the DOS application just fine. However if you want to print an e-mail or a Word file it merely feeds two blank pages out. I have uninstalled and reinstyalled the printer all to no effect. If you priny a test page it merely produces two blank sheets.

It looks as if the Windows driver is corrupt. Remove and reinstall it, as follows (this will not affect DOS printing as DOS does not use the Windows driver)

Go to Printers & Faxes. Delete the printer. Then, from the File menu, select Server Properties. Click the Drivers tab and remove any instances of the printer from the list. Then reinstall, either from the CD or from a freshly downloaded copy.

Try new drivers :

remove previous ones (or remove device).

I have tried removing the drivers and reinstalling with freshly downloaded ones. It made no difference. The printer is connected byy a long 15' parallel lead and an A/B switch. I am wondering if it is this causing the problem, being OK for DOS but not enough for Windows communication.
Can I instal a USB lead and instal the printer as a usb printer only for Windows and the parallel lead for DOS?

It would appear that I need a 13 Metre USB Cable. I am told that I would need to put a hub every 5 Meters , so I am going to try it
