exchnage send/receive hanging - offline address book connecting to exchange

hey fellow experts,

i have a user who is trying to connect outlook to my exchange over site to site VPN connection. Everything is set up correctly with DNS and able to ping/resolve names properly. When I do a send/receive it hangs at 65. The task "Offline address book connecting to exchange server" is where it hangs. any ideas ?

i recently did a migration from 2003 to sbs08 - i dont think they previously had OAB configured/working.

thanks for your help

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

This is an OAB issue. outlook send/receive is working fine but the error is only occuring because outlook is not able to download offline address book.

please check the behaviour
1. when we configure the outlook of the same user from local network where actually exchange server is residing.
2. If it is working fine then error is simply due to network restrictions on vpn.

what type of restrictions on vpn ???

tusharnextgenCommented:
restrictions related to downloading restrictions etc. because oab files would get downloaded to outlook client. (or protocol and port related restrictions if any on vpn or firewall)

But before this have you checked if it is working fine if we configured outlook profile in internal network

yes it works fine internally.

that is actually no longer an issue. i turned off downloading the oab. outlook now hangs @ "syncronizing hierarchy"

You cannot stop as its a Default feature of Send\Receive .......

if it is working fine internally that means when user use vpn to connect to exchange he doesnot get full functionality due to rules at firewall level.

because if its exchange or user related issue then it must present at all times whether user connect from internal network or external network using VPN.

Please check your external firewall which allows connection from internet towards vpn. (I do not have experties on vpn and firewall so :( cannot help on this)
