Laptop Problems

I've got a laptop that recently had an error loading the registry.
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

A repair of Windows fixed the problem.  Once I got the OS to run, I downloaded a tool from the hard drive manufacturer and found that it passed all the tests on the drive.

A few days later, I booted the laptop and found the CD drive was not listed under "My Computer" I rebooted the laptop and the drive did show.

I'm thinking that the motherboard on this laptop is faulty, but I'm looking for other opinions.

A great tool for complete hardware testing is UBCD

It also includes the memTest86  program that lucius suggested.

Run some diagnostic tests from there and see if you can find anything. If nothing is found it could also be virus infection or the like. Make sure your antivirus software as well as antimalware software is installed and up to date.

It doen's have to be the motherboard really. Don't change the motherboard just yet :)
You should check with MemTest86 or MemTest86+ to see if your memory is ok, then test your hard drive with the producer's tools. After that you may want to test your computer using some bur-in tests. If all that goes well, then it's most likely the  operating system. Reinstall it and and see if the problems
oh also try virus scan because now a days alot of viruses specially in xp. same thing happened to me 3-4 years ago and it was a virus give your computer all the tests above and a full computer virus scan.
