First, setup the same Workgroup name for new computer.
What would you like to achieve? Share files from Windows 7 or connect to XP shares?

Start menu -> Right click "Computer", choose "Properties", click on "Advanced System Settings".
Switch to tab "Computer name". Click "Change" and in the "WORKGROUP" field type the name of the workgroup to join.
