Can't Boot to Anything

I have a computer and I am at a loss as to how to fix this. This is an older HP Media Center with XP media center software.
Basically, it will boot up normally and when I click on the profile it shuts down. I can't boot in to safe mode either, every time I try it start to boot all over again. I have tried running a boot on the last known good settings and there is no change. I tried running HP recovery and nothing happened. I have tried booting to the OS disk and every time I put in the key it shuts down. Any suggestions?

Sorry about that.  Thanks.

Also I finally booted the computer to The Media Center CD.  It stopped in the middle of booting to the give me an error.

File ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.  The error code is 7. Setup can not continue.

Could be just about anything.

I'd be looking at a hardware problem to start with.  Memory, hard disk, motherboard, power supply.

Get the UBCD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Download links are the icons at the top of the page above Overview.  Browse the page and see what utils are there for you.  Check the memory and hard disk utils especially.

Make the CD and boot from it.  Run the memory tester first - memtest -  and let it do two to three passes through your memory.  Memory could be the problem so get that test done first.

Then test the hard disk with the correct manufacturer's util for your hard disk.  Do the long test.  That will most likely tell you if your disk is corrupt.

Those two tests will do memory and hard disk and may also stress the computer out.  Post results back.

Have you updated your BIOS or added any additional devices?  I'd stay away from the HP Recovery console as its always been problematic for me and will remove anything on the machine if you're not careful.

Can you get access to a non Media edition of XP?  I'm just curious if you could get into the recovery console after booting off of the cd to repair a few things (chkdsk /r and such).

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

Well, this started in a program called bit defender found a virus.  It said it removed the virus.  After that the computer worked for about 30mins.  After that it shutdown and has not been able to come back up since.  There has been no new hardware or devices added to the machine.

I will give the ultimate boot CD a shot.

Which Service pack are you on?  If your install media is of a different SP, it could explain the issue of not being able to fully load through the install disk.

if it found a virus and removed it and then the problems started, it may have removed or changed a necessary system file.  A repair install should fix it, we just have to figure out how to get you booted up off the disk.

I was thinking it had to be a system file.  I can boot to a Windows screen.  then I click on my user account.  It starts loading and then imeddiantly says its logging off.  I will see if I can get some different service pack versions and test it that way.

I have never had good luck with bit defender - it actually has destroyed the registry on any machine I have used it with causing me to reload the OS. At this point my advice is to pull the drive, if you have a usb be sled or attachment use that to copy all the data off the drive to another external drive (robocopy is good for copying the entire drive) and reload the OS.

If you really want to save the OS your best bet is to use an XP disc and use the recovery console to try and repair the registry - before doing that though save the data.

I finally found out that the combination of Media Center 2005 and XP Pro SP2 where the right disks to use.  I did a repair install and the computer finally booted up.  My problem now is that I can not get any updates to load onto the machine.

Error messages?

No error messages.  Just says this update did not install.  When I try to install Service pack 3. It just says there was an error and service Pack 3 will uninstall itself.

What was the original version of Media Centre on this machine?

Also check the Service Pack installation log for error messages.  See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949388

It says that Access is Denied.  I tried using the windows support file 949377.  Nothing worked in that file.  Here is the feed back from the log:

Using bit defender. I thought so too. I turn off the antivirus. But I did find it still running a program even after it is completely turned off

Look at the other comments in the Microsoft link about resetting the registry and file permissions.
