How to clean up exchange 2007 mailbox database

I have removed email accounts from the "management console", but it seems as though these mailboxes still exist. I believe so because the size of my mailbox database size has not decreased. Please advise.

    Accepted Solution

    The Exchange database never shrinks.
All that happens is the space is marked as white space. It will then be used again.

If you want the size of the database to shrink then you have to do an offline defrag. However on Exchange 2007 that is a waste of time. Simply move everything out the of the store and drop the original. Restart the Information Store service. You can then delete the original mailbox database.

Have you tried to restart the stopped services configured to run
    automatically in Microsoft Exchange ?
Goto Start -> Administrative Tools -> services and restart especially
    the following services

    1. Microsoft Exchange Information Store
    2.Microsoft Exchange POP3
    3.Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission
    4. Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging
    5.Microsoft Exchange System Attendant
    6. Microsoft Exchange Transport.
