FTP & Dedicated server

I have a number of ftp clients I have bought.  They work for most of my client's web sites, but the ones hosted on a VPS or dedicate server give me constant errors.  When I call support for these different clients, they always tell me the same thing: the problem is with the server, and of course they want me to install their ftp server on the server.
Can someone shed some light on this?  Could the problem be on the servers?  What can I do to get a reliable ftp connection going here?

I don't really understand why you need to buy FTP clients in order to connect to the FTP backbone of websites; there are a number of free clients available. Filezilla (http://filezilla-project.org/), for instance, is a very good free client that runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux.

As to the rest:
You don't give us enough information to make a reasonable judgement about the situation.
- What clients do you use?
- What are you trying to do?
- What exact error messages do you get? And when?
- Who administers that VPS? You yourself, a client, someone you know, someone else?
- What server software is running on the VPS? What server OS?

I am using filezilla plus 3d-ftp, SmartFtp, and ws_ftp.
It is a Windows 2008 server with Plesk.
The errors are "critcal error", "command not understood", "transfer failed".  Not very help, are they.

Is it your own VPS server? Or do you have access to the panel?

Could you post a log of a failed attempt?
In Filezilla, after the attempt was aborted, right-click in the message window (the one above the directory tree views), select "Copy to clipboard" and post the contents here, if possible as a code snippet.

It is a dedicated server. I have access to it and the Plesk control panel.
Two snippets of code attached.  They show two errors.

The log is not as complete as I'd have hoped, alas. It begins in the middle and has incomplete and missing lines. As an example, I'll append the log of a complete server transaction that I just recorded visiting a very famous MS FTP server.

But I think I may already have spotted what the problem is.
Please look at lines 2 and 32. They both are right before a timeout, and issue a PORT command like this:
"Command: PORT 192,168,2,3,x,xxx"

An IP address beginning with '198.168' is always an internal network address, not an internet one. Basically, your client tells the server to connect to it using the client's internel network IP which can only be accessed from inside your client's network. The server will either not get any response at all (because no such IP exists on its network), or connect to a machine on its own internal network that has the same internal IP, but is not your client machine. In any case, no transfer is possible.
If you wish to know in detail, please consult this page: http://www.sbbi.net/site/jafs/docs/upnp-nat.html

First thing to try:
Connect using PASV. To do that, open the Filezilla server manager, go to the server details, select the tab 'Transfer settings' and set the radio button to "Passive". Then try again.

Let's hope it works. If it doesn't, you may choose yourself whether you wish to configure the server (plus Plesk firewall) to allow PASV connections, or whether you'd prefer to configure the NAT (Network Address Translation) settings on your own lan/router.

torimar,
I think you are on to something.  I had been using passive mode until I spoke with the server support team.  They told me to switch to active mode and everything should work.  Well, it didn't, and they don't know why. They said it was not configured for passive mode.

Sorry for the short snippits from the log.  I was transferring 991 files, so the full log was very long.
I'll read the link you posted.

torimarCommented:
You were transferring 991 files just for a test? Or did some of them work and you only copied the ones with errors? Couldn't imagine this, to be honest.

Try the follwing:

In Filezilla, go to Edit > Settings > FTP > Active Mode.
Under "Active mode IP", unselect "Ask your operating system..." and either insert your external IP in "Use the following IP address", if you have a static (= never changing) one, or use the filezilla service under the third option.

Restart Filezilla and try a connection again.

If still no good, go to the same dialogue again, and under "Limit local ports used by FZ" define a short range of, say, 50 - 100 ports anywhere above 5000. Then turn to your router's configuration panel and forward that port range to your internal IP, i.e. 192.168.2.3 if it is always the same machine as in the snippet above.

Then try again.

I did as you said.  Now I get, "Failed to retrieve directory listing"  So, I reset things back the way they were, and I still get "Failed to retrieve directory listing."  What happened.

No, I am not doing this as a test.  I have a web site the client wished to move to a dedicated server.

torimarCommented:
Is your connection still set to 'Passive'?
If so, set it to 'Active' again, because my suggestions were meant for active mode. Then reapply the settings as I told you above, and try again.

Please post complete logs when things go wrong.
And as long as this is still in experimental mode, use only 2 or 3 files for testing, not the whole site.

Yes, I used Active mode.  Now, no matter what settings I choose, I get "Failed to retrieve directory listing"
Looks hopeless to me.  Must be something screwed-up on the server.  The people at Codero say it is not the server, but I am beginning to wonder.

Any way to fix the "Failed to retrieve directory listing"  error?

So what does happen now?

Sorry, without complete log files I'm as blind as a mole and can't even venture a more or less educated guess.

Do you have access to the server settings and configuration? Or is it administered by the people you keep talking with? In the latter case, this is not a proper dedicated server, but a managed one.

Anyway, will have to go now for a couple of hours.
