Can WS2K3 pre R2 be hacked to run R2's DFS Management?

Simple query... and the answer is probably no.

WS2K3 R2 brought a vastly enhanced DFS Management toolset.  This is unavailable on the original WS2K3.  However the toolset is lightweight and (as far as I can tell) self-contained.  I want to try to find a way to get it running on the only one of our servers that is not running R2.

Reason is that it's in a different location and easier to access.  This server is part of the DFS setup; the other three servers are in remote locations and all running R2.

Does any of the bright minds out there know how to hack the R2 DFS Management tools to run on an R1 machine?  I've tried copying the files across and launching dfsmgmt.msc does launch the MMC console but gives the message "MMC could not create the snap-in"?

What's missing?  Do I need to register some dll's (think not - all in same directory) or install some other supporting files?

Pre-declaration: I know this might not be soluble.  But there are some damn smart people here so always worth asking!

Hi,

This was done on Windows Vista and I hope it should also help you: http://forums.techarena.in/tips-tweaks/934213.htm

Thanks for the response.  The usual "Microsoftism" at work here - so many patches, versions and service packs that I didn't realise there was a WS2K3 R2 AdminPack available.
Installed it and it works a treat.  I didn't have to invoke the regsvr thing you pointed out.
Points awarded for some year-end cheer.
Thanks.
