Our webpage is being redirected to only when on a certain page

Hi all,  I really need help.  we have a self serve website where staff can access a client database via web browser.  I'm not too familiar with this because anothr company manages it.  But when they go to ex: http://192.168.1.x/database/default.cfm.  this points to the server and was setup using coldfusion.  but when they go to edit a certain page (only) it is redirected to  I checked to see if i could uninstall anything dealing with, nothing was there.  I also scanned with norton 2009, avast, I did an avast boot scan and spybot s&d to no avail, now I'm starting to think it might be an issue more servere.
I have smitfraud, but nothing either.  can anyone give me direction with this.

It will be much appreciated.  good thing it's the holidays or it will be emergency status, i'd like to get it resolved b4 everyone comes back from the holidays.

Try pointing your DNS somewhere externally.,, for example.

    Sorry, about that.

Go to network connections, on the computer that is being redirected to

Right click the Network adapter (usually called "local area connection") and select properties.

Under the general tab, scroll the list that is there down until you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and select it.  Now push the properties button.

In the window that pops up, select the radio button on the bottom that says "Use the Following DNS address". NOTE:  please observe the present settings (write them down) in case you need to change them back.

Enter the IP of one of these free, alternate DNS name servers:, or (Google's DNS).

Test it out.  If it doesn't work or you loose internet just go back into those settings and change them back to what they were before.

    Accepted Solution

Please run hijackthis and post the log here.

Run malwarebyte on the machine and see if it catches anything. This should let you know if you are infected.

If this scan finds problems then download combofix to your desktop and run it. Make sure you read the tutorial (it is brief).

Yeah, I saw no reference to in add/remove, that was my 1st guess.  I scanned with norton 2010, avast boot time scan, stopzilla  and this one area is still forwarding to

    Author Comment

I am also trying malware bytes now.  scanning, so far it says it found 15 issues, but we'll see  the other programs are coming up with nothing.

    Expert Comment

Have you check the host file for oddities or extraneous entries.  This is most likely not the issue but it is worth a check.  Perhaps some previously removed malware made a modification (although i can't really say why malware would redirect you to - which is the reason I don't believe this issue is being caused by malware).  Either way the host file is locate at WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\.  Its called hosts (:D).  Open it with notepad.  the only entries, by default, should be       localhost

Anything after a # is a comment, and you can disregard them (like the entry for example).

Just looked through the HJT you posted.  You definitely have some malware on there.  Malware bytes should take care of that.

This section of HJT is interesting.  URLsearchhook is what tells IE Explorer where to direct uninterpretable URLs.  Your entry is pointing to nothing (no name).
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {E38FA08E-F56A-4169-ABF5-5C71E3C153A1} - (no file)

This one might be worth removing.

One other thing.  It looks as though you have multiple AntiVirus programs installed: avast and Norton internet security (not anti-spyware - thats probably malware).  This is usually not a good idea.  I would remove one or the other (or both and try something new, like Microsoft Security Essentials)

    Author Comment

    Thanks Bumslaw,
I will try what you mentioned.  I scanned with malwarebytes and it found 23 issues but did not stop the issue.  I'll check the host file and hlt.   withe the host file, can I copy a good one to another xp pro system?  will that cause an issue? or fine to do
    LVL 1

    Expert Comment

Its more about whats NOT in the host file.  Just open it up with notepad; as long as there is nothing in there besides local host, it should be fine.

After re-reading your problem, its most likely not the host file.  This would come into play if you were trying to redirect something locally.  I used to use this method to make certain programs point to internal servers when they look for servers on the internet (which is pretty much the opposite of your problem).

So...check your internet options on that PC to make sure your not running through a proxy.  I know that some of those malware programs will point your default browser to a proxy to stop you from getting to the internet.  Also, try going to the affected site with a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari. etc).  You could run a trace route on the IP as well to see where your requests are going to initially.

    Author Comment

b ut, users are actually connecting VPN and then using a shortcut pointing to something similar to http://serverIP/main.cfm.   to get to the web based app.  so with this, it has nothing to do with the host file?

Yes, i have many, attepting to clear this issue.  the strange thing is it only forward when we try to edit a client file.  everything else within the app works fine.
    LVL 1

    Expert Comment

Ah I see, its an internal web service, through a VPN.

So your clients have a shortcut, which they click, which launches a browser and runs a ColdFusion application that connects to a server, through a VPN; is this correct?

    Author Comment

You are exactly right.   But it is only happening on 2 systems so far,  some other who are connecting edits and don"t get forwarded to  So it does seem isolated to these 2 systems for now.
