On MAC with Snow Leopard, how do I get the startup disk to show on the desktop?

Just got a new IMAC with OS X 10.6.2.

I noticed there was no icon on the desktop for the boot drive, which I am used to seeing.

I tried to make an alias for it but the system would not let me, so, my question is, is there a way to put an alias / shortcut for the system drive on the desktop???

Click on the desktop to make sure you are in Finder.

Pull down the Finder menu to Preferences, then check the box to Show Hard Disks on Desktop.
