Teaching an ANSI SQL class and need a datasource and editor to practice writing code

I am teaching an introductory SQL class and I need a sample database (datasource) and a tool for my students to practice writing queries and seeing results.  I tried downloading some freeware tools, but they are demonstrations not editors.  Help please.

But keep in mind - none of the currently available DBMS fully implement ANSI SQL 92 or later! In particular the date literal syntax and conversion functions are not compatible between DBMS. However, I agree that MSSQL (Express) is a good start, since everybody can download and use it free of charge, and it covers a wide area of ANSI SQL. And, what is more important, it is industrial standard.

There are other free editions, like Oracle Express Edition, but usually the installation is not that easy as with MSSQL, or ANSI SQL is not really covered sufficient (e.g. SyBase, MySQL).

I downloaded  Adventureworks, SQL Express, and SQL management studio express.   I am not sure what to do next.  I went to All Programs and Microsoft Sql Server 2008 and all I see if Configuration tools. How do I get it to run?

MSSQL Express is a service. It should already made to run automatically.
Further you should have the Management Studio Express in the same menu as Configuration Tools submenu. That is the GUI for bothing management and SQL. When you start it, it will most probably ask for a server connection, which will (usually) be ".\sqlexpress"; use Windows Authentication, as this should work immediately.

Microsoft Sql sERVER 2008 A fatal error occurred during installation.  Details: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.  This is what appeared.

Mimer SQL is the best implementation of ISO SQL92 that I know (includes SQL99 features as well). It's more compliant than Microsoft SQL Server anyway. I don't know of any sample databases for it though.

Please understand that SQL is an ISO Standard. It is created and overseen by an ISO committee, not by ANSI. ANSI is just one of several organisations that publish the ISO SQL Standard. So it would be more accurate to say you are teaching an ISO SQL class, not an ANSI one.

The general linguistic usage is still ANSI SQL (at least up to including SQL-92). However, it is true that the ISO is responsible for SQL standardization. The new standards are called ISO SQL:2003 and ISO SQL:2008, while the "old ones" (which are in use) are ANSI (!) SQL-89, (ANSI or ISO) SQL-92 and (ANSI or ISO) SQL-99.
