Sending external email from Debian Box

This should be really simple but I can't find a simple solution.

Got a basic Debian box and I want to send email from the command line
 # mail user@domain.com .....

When I do so, I get "Mailing to remote domains not supported".
The Exim and other configuration seem very complex - I just want to send the email

How can I turn off the remote domain block?  I can use an external SMTP relay if that helps.

You need to either configure an installed MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) or install one.

For a machine where you're not intending to run a full blown mail server, I recommend using a "simple" MTA that doesn't do local mail delivery on the machine to local users, but sends all mail off (usually through your "regular" mail server) elsewhere, for security and the KISS principal.

Table 6.4 in the MTA section of the Debian Reference Manual provides a list of choices for MTA in Debian:

You might consider the "ssmtp" package vs. configuring a more full-featured MTA, if all you're trying to do is get mail to deliver OFF/AWAY from this machine.
