Extend wireless signal

I have two LinkSys wireless routers.  When I set up router 1 my laptop cannot connect to it.  I wish to take the second one (WRT54GC) and place it between the first router and the laptop to try and boost the signal...

Can this be done?  Will the WRT pickup the signal from the first router and boost the signal in an effort to stop the attenuation?

Does this mean that the WRT54GC will not work?

To answer your question, no. As bsohn147 indicated, you need a expander to expand the signal. The WRT54GC is just another broadband router, it does nothing with boosting a signal. Are you able to connect to the device when your in range? If not, there is some other underlying issue. If you can connect, then the expander is your only option with this given scenerio.
