Snapshot Processing stuck - Backup Exec 12.5

Hi,

I am running the following setup: -

Server 2k8 and backup exec 12.5 - backs up to an external ultrium 2 drive.

Each time a backup kicks off it gets stuck on the 'snapshot processing' stage - advanced file option is turned off?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Is that a local backup or remote backup?
Check the VSS Writers status on the server you backed up via VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS.
Maybe a reboot will fix it.
Otherwise you should check the system event log for the errors.

It is a local backup.

I have tried a re-boot several times to no avail.

How would I go about checking the VSS writers status? - I think changing the 'quiet time' could solve the issue.

To do this however you need to run the wizard and I get a message saying the software doesnt appeat to be installed correctly?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

The quiet time is designed to run on the OS without MSVSS provider like W2K.
You are running W2K8 and there is built-in MSVSS provider so you can't run the AOFO wizard.
Run command line and run VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS, refer to http://support.veritas.com/docs/261993 for more details or google the key words as below to get more details from Microsoft support website.
vssadmin list writers site:support.microsoft.com
Btw, what are you backing up? File? Exchange Informatioin Store?

Great thanks for your help.

I am not in the office today but I will try it tomorrow and will let you know how I get on.

I am backup my F&P server as well as my exchange server - the strange thing is if I divide the job into x2 parts it works ok, its simply when I try them together.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks,
Toby

Did you tick the checkbox to enalbe AOFO in your job?
It will be all right for your file backup job with AOFO but I saw issue happened sometimes for the Exchange backup job with AOFO enabled and Symantec suggests not to enable AOFO for Exchange backup job.
I always suggest to divide the Exchange backup job without AOFO when they need to run backup job with AOFO.

BJLJ,

No the AOFO option is disabled.

I have divided the jobs and so far the file server seems to be backup up ok - I'll check the exchange server later.

Jackie LiuCommented:
I think it's a good workaround to divide your jobs epically for Exchange backup.
Backup Exec is a VSS-aware backup application and E2k7 is always backed up via VSS with Backup Exec.

Hi,

I think I have resolved the issue re the snapshot processing - both jobs now run ok.

The last problem I have is the time the jobs are due to run - I get a 'missed' error? E000E020

The availibility windows closed - how do I ensure this doesnt happen?

Thanks

Jackie LiuCommented:
Make sure your device is available in the backup time window and the media is writable.
i.g. check the media set for the overwrite period or append period..

tobydonaldAuthor Commented:
The device is always available and the media set is set to overwrite.

I have increased the 'and no later than' time so hopefully this should sort the problem.

I will let you know.

Thanks,
Toby

I increased the 'no later than' time however the backup was still missed?

Jackie LiuCommented:
How many jobs are you running?
Check the message in Alert...

tobydonaldAuthor Commented:
There are 2 jobs setup but only 1 is configured to run at a time.

In the alerts tab there is nothing relating to an error about the time.

I get the error code E000e020 from under job history.

I am also still getting 'snapshot processing' problem when backing up my F&P server - I have no problems at all with the exchange server. Tofix this I think I need to run the AFO wizard and change the quiet time to 2 down from 5. When I try this a message saying it hasnt been installed correctly is displayed. I have tried a re-install and repair on the backup exec installation but to no avail?

I have never had so many problems with backup exec!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Toby

I have resolved the snapshot issue by creating the batch file containing the updated .dll's - I think you mentioned this earlier so I will accept your solution now!

Any ideas re the time - I have setup a 5 hour window so the job and at present the job is only 41GB so it cannot be the job runs out of time - must be my configuration of the time or something?

Thanks

Just to let you know both issues have no been resolved.

Snapshot processing issue was fixed by creating and running a batch file with updated .dll's

The time issue was solved by givng a huge distance in the time between backups - seen strange but has worked.

Thanks for all your help

The problem has started again - have re-run the .DLL's but no joy?

Problem is very annoying.

Exchange backs up first time with no problems at all, AOFO is disabled on the job?

Ideas?

Jackie LiuCommented:
MS VSS relative issue is complicated, it will be all right after a OS reboot for the Exchange Server sometimes.
