Save to desktop

Hi-
Im new to windows 7. I am frustrated that when I try to save files I cannot find 'my desktop' to save the item to.

For instance, if I am in MS Word and try to save a new file, I don't see anywhere to easily find the desktop.
How do I do this?

Thanks - p
