quickbooks simple start 2009 printers disappear after an update

computer has QuickBooks simple start 2009 on it.  It also has Windows XP and the computer is on a Microsoft Domain.

My boss downloaded and installed the update.  He now cannot print to any of his LAN printers!  We uninstalled the printers and reinstalled them.  He was able to print invoices once but now he cannot again.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated!!

For ordinary report printing, QuickBooks uses the Windows Printers. So check that QuickBooks is set to use the printer you installed (it may be set for a different printer or different printer name). There is a printer setup menu under File in QuickBooks, but I do not know about EasyStart. Check there.

If that doesn't work, consider uninstalling Easy Start, restarting the computer and re-installing Easy Start.

We did what you recommended.

We are hesitant to uninstall and reinstall.  That requires a call to the help center and that takes a while to get through.  Besides, it is annoying to my CFO.

QuickBooks is fairly straightforward to uninstall and to install and should not really require a call to the help center to do this.

What you could do is to try to install Easy Start on another PC (a spare one, or your own perhaps) and see if, given a fresh install and update, whether it prints. If so, then that would give you reason to try reinstallation on your CFO's machine.

In many years with QuickBooks, report printing has not be a problem of any significance, especially with Windows XP (Vista/Windows 7 64-bit has some issues that have workarounds and only for PDF printing).

Ok, I assume when you say he now cannot print to any LAN printer you mean from QB only. He can still print from other apps right?

Does he have a printer connected to his system? From QB FILE>PRINTER SET UP.. Select Invoice and the select the local printer. Will that print? What if any messages are you getting?

His local printer is a LAN printer.  It is a Lexmark E250n.
He can print from all other applications to his printer.
He used to be able to print from QB to his printer before the QB update.
He is running XP and connected to a Domain with roaming profiles but without redirected folders.
His computer has an Intel motherboard and Core2 Duo processor.
Whenever we reload QB on his computer we have to call in to get the verifcation code.

We have done the QB FILE>PRINTER SET UP.  No printers show up on his selection list except for the QB PDF converter.

With respect to reloading, the verification code is usually the same. If you write it down, you can usually re-verify yourself (at least on the same machine).

There appears to be something wrong with the installation or the machine setup. QuickBooks just uses Windows for its printers.

Did you try loading QuickBooks on your machine? Licensing is tied to usage, not the number of installations. I really think you need to try this on another computer, because the evidence here starts to suggest there is something wrong about the CFO's machine.

Since all of our printers are on the server, we use dynamic print queue loading on the computers.  When a person logs in they get the print queues based on their permissions.
This has been the same at this location for 2 years.  The problem came in after he did the update from QB.

I do understand about the update, but I have been updating QuickBooks (various versions) for years, and updates have not cause printing failures. This is why I suggest you try another installation on another machine as it will assist troubleshooting. ... Thinkpads_User

try...
The word "on" is in the network path of the shared printer (for example, \\Acme\Hp on Acme) and is not capitalized. QuickBooks sees on as a separator for the end of the network path.
OR
The printer name is more than 64 characters long. - This refers to the complete path name, not just the printer name.

Also, try renaming the default printer.

I have a few issues on Windows 7 with printing (but not locking up). This article below (which replaces a DLL that communicates with printing) fixed my issue. It happen with the most recent update.

See if it applies to you. I don't think you can hurt anything by replacing the DLL. Just rename the old one first in case you need it back. ... Thinkpads_User

My issue is the printer does not show up in the quickbooks printer list.  I have the same problem with Adobe Reader 9.  It will see the printer but later on the printers will not show up.

John HurstBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
The original post referenced problems after a QB update, which is why I referenced the DLL replacement.

But now you are saying it is also an Adobe problem. I have zero problems with Windows 7 printing and Windows 7 printing with Adobe, locally or on a LAN, so I would say something else is wrong.

So would I.  All of my workstations on the LAN are XP machines.  All the machines are powerful enough to run Windws 7 well, but our POS system won't run on it.

The Adobe issue just came up Friday (yesterday).

The printers are all LAN printers assigned to the computer when a person logs on.
