Convert internal laptop hard drive for use as external drive

What are some choices for an inexpensive solution to use an HP laptop hard drive as an external drive on another PC? What are the issues to consider?

I would go and buy an external cable that adapts laptop drives to USB. If you want to place your USB in an external enclosure, you can do that too.

Cable example:

Here is external case for the laptop drive:
http://www.amazon.com/HD-234-U2P-Aluminum-Portable-External-Enclosure/dp/B001LDROGI/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262639227&sr=1-18

There are other cases for 2.5" SATA drives.

The only issue I see is that you will need to be sure not to unplug the drive while the computer is in use. Also, try to use an eSATA cable if you have that option and buy a case that supports eSATA. Otherwise, USB 2.0 is a good choice.

Try using a hard disk case. they are really cheap, and easy ways to make a internal hard drive and external USB drive.

The biggest issue is that some laptop drives are PATA (parallel - earlier) and some are SATA (serial - more modern). You want to know what you are hooking up to what.

Otherwise, you can get inexpensive USB laptop drive enclosures that are widely used and will do what you want here. .. Thinkpads_User
