see if the windows service for active directory is started.

if it is windows 2003 server :

Start > run > dsa.msc

if the snap-in opens up, it means that this server has active directory installed ;

Or Administrative tools you would see Active directory users and computers, sites and services

all I can think off at the moment

Type //servername if it is a domain controller you will your netlogon and sysvol folders.

Alternitavely you can download altools.exe from ms. The lockout tool queries all your domain controllers and you can find their naes that way
