Hard Drive Health

I'm running windows server 2008.  I'm looking for a very basic program that can monitor the health of my system. I'm MOST concerned with hard drive errors that could indicated a failing drive.

Any good programs out there that do this and can send me a message via e-mail or sms? If something happened and the network went down, sms or someway of checking in with an iPhone app would be great (i.e. server hasn't checked in with iPhone in over an hour, something's wrong kind of thing).

  I'm kind of a newbie so I don't know a lot. Thanks

Take a look at URL Toy software it seems they have exactly what you are looking for,  you can use
Advanced SmartCheck in order to monitor your Hard Drives
S.M.A.R.T system status on your whole network (S.M.A.R.T. has to be enabled in the MB bios
in order for the software to use it which mostly isn't the default setting) and it will notify you by email if something goes wrong or is going to do so.

Also there is Advanced Network Monitor which monitors servers on the network and has the
ability to notify you using email, sms and pm.

Both programs have a free trial and are less expensive compared to other professional tools
I've seen. Can't hurt to try.

Rewarding opportunities for women in IT

Across the nation, technology jobs are vacant because there aren’t enough qualified professionals to fill them. With a degree from WGU, you can get the credentials it takes to become an in-demand IT professional. Plus, WGU’s IT programs include industry certifications.

Diskkeeper seems to be centered on fragmentation. I'm looking for something that monitors "health" and sends notifications on more than just fragmentation. Maybe something that can help indicate or predict a failing drive.

Try this tool that allows you to predict possible HDD failure and prevent losing the critical data.

Can you explain a little more about your windows 2008 box? Is it a server? Does it have a RAID Array? The reason I ask, is that if it is a name brand server such as Dell and HP, the server management software has this same feature built in. It can check the health of your disks, detect possible failures and also alert you via email.

I am running server 2008. It runs my domain, exchange server and holds all my company's critical data (client info, records etc)

It is a Dell poweredge 2850 that I bought used and have since put my own copy of server 2008 on it- so I'm not sure if I have any of the Dell tools you mention above.

It is running in a raid 5 configuration.

So if you recommend some software and it sends emails, SMS etc my next question would be, if the system crashes or breaks, how would I know because no email could be sent. Know what I mean?
Thats why I think I need something that also checks in with like a iPhone app or another offsite server, that way the external device would send a flag saying like "system hadn't checked in for over an hour" or something.

  Thanks

You would need to setup another server for the Operation Manager.

If you go to Dell's website and click on support on the top right hand side, then click on support for small business, select drivers and downloads, select choose by service tag and put in the server service tag. Should be displayed on the side or back of the server (or you can just selct by model number instead of inputting the server id tag). When it brings up your information look under system management and find the Openmanage Server Administrator. This si the tool that does everything your looking for with the exception of sending an email while the machine is down (which I don;t see how any software will do this). I have provided a screenshot of what all it can monitor.

The software works on Win2K8, and supports not only ATA/SATA but SCSI, fibre channel and SAS.  It also works with many RAID controllers, but certainly not all of them.

So off top of my head I don't know exact model of the controller you are using, but all RAID controllers use proprietary APIs.  You need to talk to the software vendor to determine if their product will work with your controller and talk to the disks behind it.

I have a raid card, dont remember the model off the top of my head, but it does not have SMART support/

SMART is a feature built into your disk drives, it is a predictive failure mechanism,

Bast Monitoring:

easily my favourite. its managed so if the software goes down or machine hosting it, you are alerted by an offsite server.

the do all the usual management / monitoring stuff but have extras like trend analysis and fault history. SMS alerting. centrally managed so its set up by professionals so you dont find out later that you set your monitoring up wrong :op

they also do workstation monitoring and its really cheap. useful for health checks and detecting faults with clients. helps us with our budgetting for new gear, etc....
