We are currently using 3ds max to render our furniture.  However, I'm trying to decide if I should purchase an online service that does 3ds max rendering via a render farm, or if I should simply buy some workstations to do it onsite.  Whats the best workstation for rendering in 3ds max?  Would I want an core i7 processor or a xeon server type of processor?

    have a look at this

The biggest thing I would look at if I were you is the number of processors - the more the better. Just keep in mind that there are licensing issues for example while you dont need a license for every rendering machine (only if it is going to be a workstation too) the Mental Ray rendered for example will only allow up to 8 processors to be used. Any more and you will have to purchase additional licenses. I think most of the 3rd party rendering engines have a limit on processors.

The other important hing to keep in mind is RAM - lots is good.
